Chess Game

Chess is a board game for two players. It is played on a square board, made up of 64 smaller squares, with eight squares in each row and column. Each player starts with sixteen pieces: eight pawns, two knights, two bishops, two rooks, one queen and one king. The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s king, whereby the king is under immediate attack (in “check”) and there is no way to remove or defend it from attack on the next move.

The game of chess can be divided into three phases: the opening, typically the first 10 to 20 moves; the middlegame; and lastly the endgame. During the opening, players develop their pieces to prepare for battle. In the middlegame, players typically try to improve their position on the board and create threats against their opponent’s pieces. In the endgame, most of the pieces are gone and kings typically take a more active part in the struggle.
